About Word on Tipping

Most of my friends disagree with me but I leave a 20% tip on service ranging from clueless to very good. For outstanding service I will leave from between 25 and 30%. Why? Two reasons. One, a server in a restaurant is working one of the most physically demanding of jobs and two, most are single moms.

In this context, for me, it is ridiculously unimportant that my bread basket wasn’t refilled or my salad fork was not chilled. Few people that I know who have worked as servers disagree with my stance. I can be the subject of very poor service by an obviously overwhelmed young woman and when I leave her a 20% tip, I feel great. So, in a way, it’s a selfish act. Even better as now two people are happy. Simple rule of thumb, when in doubt, leave more.
